Hikes Fit For The Little Ones
September 8, 2018
The island of Maui is known for its many exceptional hiking spots. Here are a few that are particularly good for families with small children.
‘Iao Valley State Park, Central Maui
This place holds great historical significance, as it is home to the well-known, “Iao Needle and the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai.”
The 0.6 mile paved trail is perfect for small children and older people to explore the blossoming scenery and its wide range of flora and fauna.
The park is known as a “spiritual rainforest” with picnic and BBQ areas, and swimming holes.
Twin Falls, North Shore
Twin Falls is another easy hiking spot for those traveling with children.
The main path divides into two paths – the left and right fork. The left fork leads to a favorite waterfall at Twin Falls, whereas the right fork leads to an old rock stonework irrigation ditch.
If you continue walking on the right path, you will reach the “Caveman Swimming Hole and Falls.”
Waihou Spring Trail, Upcountry
Located in the Olinda Forest Reserve, the Waihou Spring trail feels nothing like some of the more jungle-like scenery you might typically associate with Maui hiking. This approximately 1.1 mile loop trail is shady and wide and is populated with huge pine trees along the way. Perfect for little ones to explore and play.
For those feeling a bit more adventurous, you can take the short offshoot to a lookout point and then take the steep switchbacks down to Waihou Springs for waterfalls and lava tubes. Just make sure your legs are ready for the hike back up!
Kapalua Coastal Trail, West Side
The Kapalua Coastal Trail is an easy walk that begins at Kapalua Beach and winds a mile and a half along the coast to D. T. Fleming Beach. The beginning and end of the trail are paved but there are sections in the middle that turn to gravel, dirt or boardwalk.
Take in the stunning scenery including beautiful beaches, rugged coastlines, native plants, lots of turtles, and multi-million dollar homes, condos, and resorts.
